04-Nov-2007 : 2007 EVENT HAILED ‘A GREAT SUCCESS’

Record Entry Attracts Large Crowds to UK's biggest Free to View Motoring Event

The November sun shone on the 2007 London To Brighton Veteran Car Run the second largest entry of pre 1905 cars in the 111 year history of the event travelled the 60-miles from London to Brighton.   The entry included 106 overseas entries, with 23 nations represented in the annual celebration of the birth of motoring.

The weekend started on Friday 2 November with the LBVCR auction at Bonhams New Bond Street London salerooms, with over 200 lots of related automobilia, plus 10 veteran cars going under the hammer.  The bidding for the 1904 Talbot Type CT2K 9/11hp Twin-Cylinder Rear Entrance Tonneau was extremely fierce, with the hammer falling at £155,000, the highest price at the auction.

On Saturday 3 November 140 of the 531 entered veteran cars took part in the LBVCR International Concours in Regent Street, with tens of thousands of visitors taking the opportunity to get a close look at the unique veteran vehicles on show for 4-hours in central London.  Seven trophies were awarded at the end of the event, including the best American entry going to Paul Noon from West Sussex for his immaculate 1902 Westfield and the Peoples Choice award, as voted for by the visitors to the Regent Street event, going to Nottinghamshire's John Brydon's 1896 Salveson Steam Open Cart for the second year running.

The first two days of motoring celebration were just the scene setter for the main event on Sunday 4 November as the 74th running of the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run got underway as the first cars left London's Hyde Park at Sunrise, headed by the oldest car in the event, an 1895 Peugeot owned by Evert Louwman of The Netherlands.  While the event is not a competitive race the privilege of being the first car to reach the finish line on Madeira Drive went to the 1902 Panhard et Levassor of Stephen Battye of Dewsbury in West Yorkshire, who took just over 3-hours to complete the 60-mile route.  The 1903 L'Elegante of Peter Selby from Windsor was the final veteran car to travel down Madeira Drive as the sun was setting over Brighton Pier.

“The 2007 London to Brighton Veteran Car Run has been a great success with, aside from the 1996 Centenary Run, the largest ever entry to take part in this historic event,” said Event Director Roger Etcell.  “The auction on Friday saw 10 veteran cars go under the hammer, the largest number since we began the event with Bonhams in 2004, attracting a record number of interested international bidders.  The Regent Street Concours continues to attract increasing attention and is growing year on year. In 2006 an estimated 200,000 people visited the event and it certainly seemed a lot busier on Saturday, and I expect the official crowd figures to bear this out.”

“The 2007 LBVCR event was once again received positive response from all participants, spectators and sponsors alike.  On behalf of the RAC I would like to thank the hundreds of volunteer marshals and officials, without whom we couldn't run this important international event.”

The 2008 London to Brighton Veteran Car Run will take place on Sunday 2 November, with the LBVCR auction on Friday 31 October and the International Concours on Saturday 1 November.
