06-Aug-2004 : 500 ENTRIES FOR VETERAN CAR RUN SPECIAL YEAR?
NEWS RELEASE 500 ENTRIES FOR VETERAN CAR RUN SPECIAL YEAR? Friday 6 August 2004 - Entries for the 2004 London to Brighton Veteran Car Run reached 450 by 31 July - the penultimate closing date. With 4 weeks to go to the final closing date of 31 August and further entries arriving daily - all eager to join the Run in the year that celebrates the youngest vehicle reaching 100 years of age - the event looks set to attract 500 pre 1905 cars with a total value estimated in excess of 35 Million to start from Hyde Park, London at 7.30am on the morning of Sunday 7 November. Entries from Australia, Argentina, South Africa, USA, Mexico, Hong Kong and across Europe and the UK are confirmation of a truly international and extremely popular motoring occasion. This celebration of motoring includes contemporary makes such as Renault, Benz, Cadillac, Daimler, Ford, Vauxhall, Rover and Peugeot - to name but a few of the many who are entered and who represent the years of 1890 to 1904 which is regarded as, probably, the most significant period ever in the history of the motor car. The Run is the world's longest running motoring event and has been a popular celebration for over 100 years with up to a million people lining the 60-mile route from London to Brighton. First run in 1896 to celebrate the abolition of the law that required motorists to be preceded by a man on foot carrying a Red Flag, the event is now a famous annual occasion and is renowned as the world's most testing endurance run for veteran cars. Presented by The Royal Automobile Club since 1930 the event is enthusiastically supported and sponsored by the Daily Mail, Tindle Newspapers, Bonhams and Renault. Roger Etcell, MD, Motion Works UK, commented This is our first year managing and organising the Run on behalf of The Royal Automobile Club and I am delighted with the level of entries and the incredible support we have received from participants and organisations such as The Veteran Car Club of Great Britain.
