NEWS RELEASE
763mph to 35mph in 7 years!
Thursday 30 September 2004 - Land Speed record holder Wing Commander Andy Green is to be a co-driver in a 1901 Mors owned by The Royal Automobile Club in the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run on Sunday 7 November 2004.
Andy will be partnering Tim Keown, Chairman of The Royal Automobile Club and Stephen Hammerton Motoring Committee Chairman in the Club's official entry into this year's new-look London to Brighton event.
Set in 1997 at Black Rock Desert USA Andy set the first supersonic record at a speed of 763.035 over one mile at Mach 1.016 in Thrust SSC powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey 202 afterburning turbofans.
The first land speed record was set in 1898 - at a speed of 39.24mph over one kilometre - three years before the Club's 1901 Mors was built.
The cruising speed of the Mors is 35mph and as Andy commented This car may not set a world record but it will certainly be a challenge and to have the opportunity to drive this 103 year old car on this famous event is a great privilege.
His co-driver Tim Keown said Stephen and I are really looking forward to the experience of being driven by the man who set the world record for speed in the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run in a car that can manage just about 35mph!
