London's Regent Street to host the International Concours for the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.
The Royal Automobile Club's Concours for the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run heads to a new venue this year. Regent Street, one of London's most famous shopping streets, closes to traffic on Saturday 5th November 2005 specially to host the International Concours for London to Brighton Veteran Cars.
The International Veteran Car Concours will be part of a special Regent Street celebration day, as later in the afternoon the Regent Street Christmas Lights will be switched on followed by a firework display to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Guy Fawke's failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament.
One hundred pre-1905 Veteran Cars, including Genevieve, arriving from around the world, will line up for a display that will span the main run of Regent Street between Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus. In addition, a number of the over 100-year-old vehicles will display the techniques of early motoring by taking demonstration runs along Regent Street and around Hanover Square.
First hosted in Waterloo Place off Pall Mall just two years ago by The Royal Automobile Club, the International Veteran Car Concours has quickly become a popular addition to the world's longest running motoring event.
This annual event is now spread over three days in early November commencing with the Veteran Car Auction at Bonhams on the Friday, at their international salerooms in New Bond Street, to kick-start the occasion which after the Saturday Concours, reaches its climax at the early Sunday morning start of the Run itself in Hyde Park - when around 500 pre-1905 cars will embark upon the 60 mile journey to Brighton's Madeira Drive.
Tim Keown, Chairman of The Royal Automobile Club, owners of the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, said: This is indeed a great honour for the Club's event and its annual celebration of early motoring. To display these wonderful cars in the splendour of Regent Street in front of so many thousands of early Christmas shoppers is a great opportunity for a wider audience to enjoy seeing them. This historic London street is a marvellous setting for an increasingly popular event.
Annie Walker, Director of the Regent Street Association was keen to add: The occasion will bring a new dimension to Regent Street's special displays. It's amazing that so many century year old cars still take to the road in such style. To host the annual International Concours for London to Brighton Veteran Cars is of great pleasure for everyone in Regent Street, which itself has such history, and we all very much look forward to welcoming the cars and their owners in early November.
