Regent Street, Hyde Park, A23 to Brighton - this Saturday/Sunday
Monday 31 October 2005 - The world famous London to Brighton Veteran Car Run (LBVCR) makes its 72nd Run in its 110 year history, to Brighton this Sunday (6 November) with 486 pre 1905 Veteran vehicles preparing for the 7.15am Start from Hyde Park and the 60 mile route to Brighton's Preston Park and Madeira Drive.
The annual Royal Automobile Club's London to Brighton Veteran Car Run event sponsored by the Daily Mail and Tindle Newspapers sees a further increase of entries for the second year running since the event came under new management in 2004. The event also features an array of new support sponsorship from; Renault, Bonhams, Regent Street, Kuoni, Autocar, Classic & Sports Car and Michelin.
New for this year is the opportunity to see over 100 of these marvellous 101 year old plus automobiles of steam, petrol and electric propulsion in Regent Street this Saturday (5 November) from 10am to 3.30pm as a fine selection from Sunday's Run enters for the LBVCR International Concours. Having assembled in Waterloo Place, Pall Mall, earlier in the day the Veteran cars will parade their way to Regent Street from 9.30am providing a spectacle along the route. Selected cars will provide demonstrations during the day's activities from Conduit Street and around Berkeley Square. The site of over 100 veteran cars in Regent Street will be reminiscent of a time when Liberty's had just opened its doors and Hamleys had been in business for over 10 years.
Many of the entrants of the Concours and the Run have transported their prize vehicles from all corners of the globe including; Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, South Africa, USA across Europe and the British Isles such is the appeal of this world famous, and world's longest running motoring event.
In addition to the above this Friday (4 November) Veteran cars and associated memorabilia go under the hammer from 2pm and auctioned to the highest bidder as Bonhams stage the now annual LBVCR Auction at their New Bond Street salerooms which is followed in the evening by a special International Participants Reception with both events kindly hosted and presented by Bonhams, one of the event's key sponsors.
Along the 60 mile route on Sunday, having started in groups from Hyde Park at 7.15am, the first Veterans are expected to arrive along the Croydon shopping precinct (a closed to normal traffic section) from 7.55 am and continue to around 11am. Redhill will see the first cars from around 8.15am, Gatwick from 8.30am and the special Crawley Official Coffee Stop area (in the Old Town Square) from 8.50am. At Cuckfield from 9.15am, Clayton Hills from 9.35am and into Preston Park, Brighton for the official finish from 10.10am with the final section seeing the first cars into Brighton's Madeira Drive for the Ceremonial Finish at 10.15am until around 4.30pm.
The World famous Genevieve (1904 Darracq) from The Louwman Collection of The Netherlands starts in 442nd position and will be driven by the owner's daughter, Quirina Louwman. Also, amongst this year's entry list are 37 first time entrants including two 17 year olds who recently passed their driving test just in time for the event!
The Saturday Concours in Regent Street and the Sunday Run from the Hyde Park Start and along the 60 mile route to Brighton (majority of the A23) is all free to spectators providing hours of entertainment with the LBVCR displaying this fascinating beginning of motoring in the UK.
