NEWS RELEASE

Runaway success for 72nd run in 110 year history

Tuesday 8 November 2005 - The 72nd Royal Automobile Club London to Brighton Veteran Car Run (LBVCR) sponsored by the Daily Mail and Tindle Newspapers started in style at Bonhams on day 1 of the new-look 3-day event last Friday when over £2,000 was raised from a special charity section of the LBVCR Auction of Veteran Cars and Automobilia, in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Saturday and 110 Veteran Cars made their way from Waterloo Place on a sunny autumnal morning to Regent Street where they created a stunning LBVCR International Concours display sponsored by the Regent Street Association until 3.30pm. Cars such as a 1903 Darracq, 1904 De Dion Bouton and 1901 Panhard et Levassor were on hand to provide passenger rides from Regent Street to Berkeley Square and back. Awards were presented on stage for 6 Concours categories including the Michelin Public Vote Award.

One passenger on the Regent Street demonstration rides, Mrs Jean Fuller, from Kent had made the journey especially to see the cars she told us These cars remind me of when I was a young child before the war so it is wonderful to see them still alive and kicking!

Sunday and the day started well with good weather for the 487 of the pre 1905 Veteran car entries of the 2005 Run with 443 actually getting away on the 60 mile route to Brighton. Entries included participants and vehicles from across the globe with over 80 entries coming from outside the UK, as far as Canada, China, Australia and the USA.

First off at 07.15am was an 1892 Peugeot, the oldest car taking part, owned by The Ward Collection and driven by Daniel Ward.

As the cars arrived at Brighton the heavens had opened which made driving conditions rather uncomfortable for many of the participant's despite their continued enthusiasm.

On route there were several who did not complete the journey for various reasons. But for those who did finish, it was a memorable occasion made all the more easier at Brighton as they used the Bus lane to avoid the usual heavy flow of traffic.

Roger Etcell, MD of Motion Works UK Limited who organises the event on behalf of The Royal Automobile Club commented, This has been a fabulous weekend with many new elements including the Concours in Regent Street that have worked well for all concerned. Many months are spent organising the event assisted by the many volunteer marshals, police forces, regional council offices and various other supporting groups and it has paid off very well. It's a shame we couldn't control Sunday's weather - maybe next year!

Ends.
